Garnier Ultimate Blends Marvellous Moisture Hair Balm First Impressions | Just Add Ginger

Garnier Ultimate Blends Marvellous Moisture Hair Balm - Just Add Ginger blog

My hair has always had a life of its own. Starting off as tight ringlets as a toddler, it is now a cross between curly and wavy, and rarely without at least one massive knot hidden at the back. Throw in several colour changes over the years, and it's fair to say that it is never wholly in tiptop condition.

However, since introducing additional vitamins in to my diet, things seem to have improved slightly. I can now get away with washing my hair just once a week, and I've seen quite a lot of growth (even since my awful visit to the hairdressers in January, which I still can't talk about)! But the condition is still a touch questionable. Smooth and glossy one day to fried and frizzy the next - I just haven't been able to find the right balance.

I've been using the Garnier Ultimate Blends shampoo and conditioner range for quite a while, with rather good results (albeit for a day or two) so during our latest "big shop" I decided to pick up one of their hair masks to try in place of my normal conditioner from the line. With options limited, I went for the Garnier Ultimate Blends Marvellous Moisture Hair Balm. Won over by the pretty packaging, affordable price and promise of rescuing my hair, I didn't really have a lot to lose.

With a subtle, salon-inspired fragrance akin to all the Ultimate Blends products, and silky consistency that glided onto my hair with ease, I jumped right in to lathering the product on my hair after an initial shampoo. Sectioning my hair into two parts and ensuring every strand was covered, During application I was surprised to see how so little product went such a long way. After coating all my hair, it barely looked like I had used any of the balm at all. Instantly, the words "bang for your buck" rang through my head - I think we all know by now that I am a sucker for a good bargain! Ignoring the 1-5 minute recommendation, I instead decided to leave the balm in for a few hours. My hair is so coarse and thick that just a few minutes wouldn't have done very much, but if you have a finer texture, then I think leaving it on for this amount of time would have been perfect.

After a few hours of sitting with the balm on, hair slicked back into a bun, it was time for a final rinse. Unsure as to whether it would be as easy to remove as it was to apply, I was ready to reach for my conditioner as soon as I hopped into the shower. But this was a totally unnecessary move, as the balm rinsed out my hair with relative ease, instantly leaving my hair feeling smoother. Although wet hair is nothing to go on really, it still left me with a feeling of hope that the end result would be the one I had been seeking.

Fast forward to the next day, and a Jackie with dry locks, and my hair was definitely feeling happy. With a claim from Garnier on the packaging that the balm "....leaves hair feeling replenished with moisture and glowing with a gorgeous glossy shine." I was definitely impressed. Whereas normally a hairbrush would snag over knots, this morning it slipped over each strand without me wincing or hearing that dreaded sound as the brush caught a matted area.

Of course, it will take more than one test to see if the Garnier Ultimate Blends Marvellous Moisture Hair Balm solves my current hair woes, and even stands the test of time after I've popped (I've heard that your hair can go a bit crazy after you've had a baby - and that's without factoring in spit-ups and going days without having any motivation to even wash your hair)! But having said that, if first impressions are anything to go on, I have extremely high hopes for this being my treatment of choice when my hair needs some TLC. Affordable, with pretty packaging, and a result that met its promises, it's definitely going to be taking pride of place on my bathroom shelf, at the ready to rescue my hair in the lead up to heading to hospital. Cos if there's one thing I do know, it's that this mummy-to-be is going to pack in pamper time as much as she can!

Ginger's Fashion: My North West Bloggers Event Outfit

Just Add Ginger
Maxi Dress: ASOS, Cardigan, New Look, Bandeau: New Look, Multi-Chain Necklace: ASOS

Hair: Blossom Hair & Make Up

Now that I'm getting in to my later-20s I'm finding it a bit harder to know what kind of things I should be wearing. I know the clothes that I like to wear, but I'm starting to get a bit conscious that I may not be able to pull certain things off as well as I used to.

For the North West Bloggers Event in June, I needed something to keep me cool, that was sophisticated, but still a bit whimsical I kept my trusty old maxi dress from ASOS understated by teaming it with a black bandeau from New Look to protect my modesty, and added a pop of colour with a coral cardigan from New Look. I threw on my vintage-inspired multi-chain necklace just to pull everything together.

My hair added a touch of fun and whimsy. My lovely hairdresser Beth from Blossom Hair & Make Up did it for me. I love braided hairstyles and she created an up-do for me that was really bohemian and free, and meant that I wouldn't get overheated. It made me feel young and fresh, and created an extra accessory for my outfit.

And I bloody loved it!

Ginger's Fashion: My Birthday OOTN & FOTN

Next Thursday, I will be turning the grand old age of 27!

So, in honour of becoming part of the "late 20s" club, on Saturday night, me, Boyfriend, Sarah (salocainwonderland.co.uk) and her other half went out into town to see Pirates of the Caribbean at the Liverpool Philharmonic, and have some celebratory beverages too.

Lace Skater Dress: ASOS
Skinny Belt: ASOS
Stacking Rings: H&M
Pearl Bracelets: A Gift

Because over the Christmas period I had put on a couple of extra lbs, I wanted to wear something I felt comfortable in, and my dress from ASOS (which you can find here) made me feel like an absolute glamour puss!

Hair & Make Up: Blossom Hair & Make Up

I was very fortunate to be having my hair and make up done for me as a Christmas/Birthday treat, and had really specific ideas about how I wanted everything to look. I am a big fan of neutral eyes, huge cat-eyes and lashings of mascara when it comes to make up, and Beth from Blossom Hair & Make Up made me look - and feel - like a flawless Hollywood Ginger Princess.

Hair had to be big bouncy and beautiful. And because I am a huge fan of braids and can't really do them myself, Beth incorporated one into my hair for me (Lauren Conrad style.)

What's your instant go-to feel-good look when it comes to hair and make up?

Beauty by Ginger: Going Ombre

When I was at uni, I decided that after years of just being ginger, it was time to experiment with my hair. I started out with deep red streaks, just to see how I felt about it.

And then in 2006, when I was going through a really hard time, I decided I wanted to distance myself from my red hair as much as possible.

And dyed my hair this colour....

Looking back, I wish somebody had told me not to do it. It was such a big mistake because once I had decided to go back to being a redhead, I had to grow all the dark brown out of my hair. So for about 6 months, I had a huge orange stripe of roots and the rest of my head was darker....I look ridiculous. But I learnt my lesson and never went that dark again, instead, opting for (semi-permanent) deeper versions of red if I fancied a bit of a change.

And then, a few moths ago, I decided to go for a completely new look. As much as I love my hair, I had got to the stage where I felt like it was just sitting on my head. It was really long, the layers had grown out, and it just looked like I had been continually dragged through a hedge backwards.

I affectionately called it my "Woodland Creature" hair.

I didn't want to go for something that would colour all my hair, so decided that  it might be a good chance to give ombre a go. It has been a style that I've always seen and thought how pretty it was, and thought that, if it turned out how I envisaged it, that I would look like a sizzling ginger lioness and banish the woodland creature hair forever!

I booked myself in for an appointment with my amazing hairdresser friend Helen at Glam Hair & Beauty. I couldn't have had anybody else help me with such a drastic change. I'm far too protective over my hair now, and with Helen, I knew that she wouldn't do anything that would make me look ridiculous!

I think you can tell from the pictures what a difference getting the ombre has made. The fabulous curly blow dry aside, my hair feels like it's got so much more life. I had the layers cut back in, and my fringe re-styled, and now I feel completely revamped!

Even when I've had sloppy days this week and not felt like doing much with my hair, the ombre has meant I still feel put-together and feminine. And because the colour is at the tips, it should last a good long while. I've just got to make sure I brush it regularly and use a really moisturising conditioner to take care of it.

Have you ever/Would you ever ombre?

Current Favourites (Autumn 2013)

Last week I had a week off from work, so decided to sit down and film a Current Favourites video.

When it comes to beauty products, I can be a bit of a creature of habit. If I find a product that I really like, I will generally tend to stick to it for ages. So doing a favourites video or blog post every month would be a bit counter-productive.

Instead, this video is a selection of products I have been loving over the past few months or so; Beauty & Miscellaneous bits and pieces that have brought me joy.

Now that the weather is starting to get colder, I'll probably be switching up a few products in my beauty/skincare regime, so make like an onion and keep your eyes peeled for another video coming up before Christmas.

What products have you been loving lately?

R is for Redhead and Proud

R: Redhead & Proud

When I was at school, I was really self-conscious about my ginger locks. There was something about being a redhead that children just latched on to....like being a redhead meant that you were secretly an alien or something.

Secondary school made me even more self-conscious. Not only was I a redhead, but I was a redhead with bad skin!!! The odds were not stacked in my favour at all. Especially when, out of all of my friends, I was the only one who suffered from horrendous spots! I REALLY think schools should be a bit more lax on the "no make up" rules they have. Being able to put on a bit of foundation and concealer without being told to wipe it off would have seriously helped me out!

Then I got to uni, and I decided to do a complete 180 on the ginger and go dark brunette!

At the time, this change was exactly what I needed, but looking back now, it is something that I would never, ever do again. Not only did it make me look even more pale, but it took FOREVER to grow out. I had huge ginger roots for ages while I was waiting for the brown to disappear.

It was not my best look!

In 2007....the horrendous bruise on my arm is from a paintball! NEVER go paintballing hungover!

After the brunette, I experimented with different shades of dark red. But I very rarely stayed with my natural colour.

Until recently.....

I've said before about my new-found confidence. Well, hand in hand with that has come a new outlook of embracing me for me, and making NO apologies for that. This includes my hair. Yes. We all know that for some, unknown reason that there is a stigma that comes with being a redhead, but I absolutely embrace my ginger side, and absolutely love the fact that I am a part of a group of people who have become a social rarity.

There is even a fantastic website specifically designed for redheads out there. How to be a Redhead is a website dedicated to all things redhead related....beauty...fashion....lifestyle. It's a great site, where reds of the world can come together in a community, and celebrate the wonder that being a redhead can be! If I'm ever in doubt, that's the website I head to to reassure myself that being ginger is a fabulous thing!

It's taken 26 years, but I have finally learnt to embrace what being a redhead means. I'm proud that I am one of a small percentage of the world population who is ginger, and love the attention that my hair can get.

Here are some great redhead-themed quotes I adore:

“Once in his life, every man is entitled to fall madly in love with a gorgeous redhead.”
― Lucille Ball

"Redheads are like the unicorns of women, except they really do exist"

"Gentlemen may prefer blondes, but it takes a real man
to handle a redhead"

"The sun on a brunette's hair looks red. The sun on a redhead's hair looks like Heaven on Earth."

Being a redhead is amazing! I wouldn't change it for the world!
