Dinner At Marco Pierre White Steakhouse | Just Add Ginger

For the past couple of years, Ryan's birthday has been slightly overlooked. First it was because we were on the cusp of getting married and then I was ready to drop. So when it came to thinking about his birthday this year, I knew I wanted to make it extra special for him. And after looking at the menu online several times, I knew that a trip to the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse in Liverpool city centre would be the perfect place to kick start the celebrations.

The restaurant is located in Hotel Indigo on Chapel Street, just a hop skip and jump away from Moorfields station so if - like us - you live outside of the city centre it's relatively easy to get to. The restaurant and bar isn't the biggest, but with contemporary decor, elements of the industrial, atmospheric lighting and a bar and dining area that have been really well thought out, the dining area evokes the perfect balance of space and intimacy. We had an early reservation but the restaurant was still busy. However we still managed to maintain a high level of privacy and not worry that Eric was disturbing other diners (he's at the 'I know if I drop toys someone will pick them up' stage).

Right from the start the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. From helping Ryan down the stairs with the pushchair to bringing him a complimentary glass of prosecco to including Eric in the dining experience they really went above and beyond to add to our visit.

In typical me fashion I had already taken a look at the menu beforehand so I had a pretty good idea what I wanted to eat. But imagine my delight when investigating the drinks menu I realised they sold Veuve Cliquot (my favourite fizz) by the glass. So naturally I ordered myself one to slowly sip during my meal.

tempura calamari and squid on plate

And as for food? To start I went for the 'properly garnished' smoked salmon (the description did tickle me a bit) and Ryan chose the calamari and shrimp tempura. We did also ask for the warm baked sourdough to share but Eric demolished most of that on his own (he was so hungry that day). My salmon was just beautiful and the garnish went so wonderfully with it. The calamari and shrimp also went down a treat. Both dishes came accompanied with half a lemon wrapped in muslin which I thought was a genius idea - there's nothing worse then getting a rogue lemon pip on your food! Even though the food was just too good to share between us we did offer Eric some to try and he seemed to enjoy everything too. He may only have one tooth but as parents we always like him to sample everything we have in the hope that he starts to develop a sophisticated palate and isn't afraid to try new things.

For mains both Ryan and I went for steak, with him choosing the T-Bone and me the fillet. Since investing in a sous-vide wand Ryan has become a bit of a meat snob but he thought his steak was cooked perfectly, pink edge to edge and really well seasoned. My knife glided through the fillet with ease and the pieces melted away in my mouth like butter. The steaks were both so tender that even Mr One Tooth could manage eating small pieces that we handed him in between munching on the cheese omelette we'd ordered him from the childrens' menu. The only negative thing I would say about the dish is that the chips were a little too salty. Other than that everything was perfect.

Something that was highly appreciated by us was the fact that we did not have to wait long in between courses. It's really tricky dining with a toddler (especially one in a bad mood) and having only a short wait before our orders came out meant that Eric was entertained for just the right amount of time without hunger or boredom paying a visit.

As this was an extra special meal we had every intention of treating Eric to a pudding but by that time came he was starting to get quite upset. So Ryan and I took it in turns to eat our desserts, with one of us eating whilst the other pushed the buggy round the bar area and vice versa. This meant that both our sweets were a little rushed, however both my choice of the Classic Dark Chocolate Mousse and Ryan's Cambridge Burnt Cream with a side drink of a Marc Me White went down a treat.

With our child getting more and more irate and us being aware that a huge meltdown could be on the cards Ryan and I decided to make a swift getaway. We bundled E up in blankets and they both headed outside whilst I settled up the bill. I explained to our server about the swift exit and he was really apologetic for our wait which was lovely but completely unnecessary. Every one of the staff members who had waited on us had been attentive and offered brilliant customer service, looking after us and making sure we had everything we needed.

I am so glad we waited for a special reason to go to Marco Pierre White Steakhouse. The food was brilliant, the ambiance warm and welcoming and the staff were excellent. I was initially slightly worried that we would feel out of place or awkward to have a baby with us but my fears were instantly put to rest. Having said that I would really like to go back as just a couple so that Ryan and I can enjoy everything at a more leisurely pace (there are also a few drinks on the wine and cocktail list  that I'm desperate to try).

Whether you have a special occasion coming up or not, if you're a big steak lover or fan of fine dining you need to head to Marco Pierre White Steakhouse and experience it for yourselves. And with both a lunch and lounge menu on offer as well as the evening, it's the perfect little spot to pop into for cocktails, nibbles, or even for a cheeky post-shopping tipple.

Taste buds tingling? Head over to the Steakhouse Bar & Grill website to peruse the menus or make a booking.

Gino D'Acampo's 'My Restaurant' Liverpool Press Night | Just Add Ginger

Gino D'Acampo My Restaurant Liverpool

One of the things I love most about living in Liverpool is how alive it is. The city is always abuzz with people excitedly going shopping, catching up in pubs, sipping champagne in bars and enjoying good food. And with so many options for where to go and what to do, you could go for a whole year and never go the same place twice.

Whenever I hear about a new restaurant my ears prick up, my tummy rumbles and my feet itch to go and check it out. And when Sarah told me about the press event for Gino D'Acampo's 'My Restaurant' on Castle Street and asked if I wanted to go with her I spent no time rushing around arranging childcare for Eric to make sure I could attend. Having spent the past year suffering from FOMO and turning down events because I was either about to drop or had a newborn to look after, this seemed the perfect way to get me back on the horse, and I found myself counting down the days until it was time for the event.

Having experienced quite a few different restaurants in the city centre it was difficult to know what to expect, but as soon as I took a step into the restaurant I knew that there was a strong chance I was going to like it. There are some places you go to that just give you a vibe that sets the tone for the evening, and 'My Restaurant' instantly emits a lively, welcoming and subtly stylish ambience the second you walk through the door, not dissimilar than the feel I get when I think of Italian interiors. Clean, vibrant and well-designed, the restaurant floor was buzzing with the sound of happy diners, with busy staff flitting in between the tables and a open kitchen that filled the air with the most delicious smells.

As we headed downstairs, it became evident how deceptively large the footprint of the restaurant is. Something that I don't think I fully appreciated on the outset. The exclusive Bullion Room - where the press evening took place - is located in one of the vaults (the restaurant used to be a bank). The placement of this private doing space honestly makes you feel like you're in a film, something that only heightens the exclusivity - a feature that I have only ever experienced in one other restaurant.

Once all the guests had arrived and we were all settled around the dining table, the evening began. The staff introduced themselves and told us a little about the restaurant and the inspiration behind it. There was even a message from Gino himself, who was away in Sardinia. After a few sips of our prosecco, everyone then started tucking in to the 'Fantastico' antipasti platter that were positioned in between us. The beautiful selection of cheese, cured meats and nibbles were presented on wooden boards. Unpretentious, straight forward, but well-presented, these all were a great introduction to the rustic Italian style of the menu and were very well paired with a glass of Primo Prosecco Spumante DOC.

Prosecco (and wine) played a big part of our evening, with each dish being paired with a glass of prosecco, white wine, rosé or red. In addition to the dining space, 'My Restaurant' also offers a prosecco bar, with several bottles to choose from and some with the option of single glass servings (so that you can figure out what you like). If you're a fan of the fizz like I am, this is definitely an instant turn on. Aside from the fizz, stand out glasses of wine were the Dada Langhe Doc Chardonnay, which has completely converted me back on to whites, and the Passo Del Bricco DOC.

It was abundantly clear just how much thought had gone into what featured on the wine and drinks menu as there were options to suit all palates and preferences. But as much as I was impressed and blown away by the drinks, the food was in a completely different league.

A plethora of dishes followed the antipasti, all offering us a sneak peek at the Autumn/Winter menu. Each dish presented was impeccably cooked, perfectly balanced and absolutely delicious. No compromises has been made on flavour, and the food did not hide behind ostentatious presentation. It delivered on taste, with every bite jam-packed with layers of flavour, and left you wanting more (in the best possible way). I wish I was able to highlight some of my favourites, but everything was a delight to eat. Ordinarily there are some ingredients that make me turn up my nose, but I wanted to try every single thing. And I am so glad that I did.

If there is one thing that surpasses the menu at 'My Restaurant', it is the passion and dedication of the staff who work there. Everybody at the event spoke with so much enthusiasm and absolute infectious  excitement about the dishes and drinks that it made you feel just the same way.

In a city where restaurants can get lost in the crowd, Gino D'Acampo's 'My Restaurant' has really found a niche that I haven't really seen before. A place suitable for couples, families and groups of friends, and offering not just a dining experience but the makings of a stellar night out, I think it has the potential to become one of the city's hotspots pretty quickly, and personally I cannot wait to see it grow.

Valentine's Day at Bistro Jacques | Just Add Ginger

Bistro Jacques - Just Add Ginger

This year, it was my turn to plan what The Boy and I were going to do for Valentine's Day. Having planned a very romantical excursion to The Liverpool Philharmonic to watch the Valentine's Day concert there, I thought that after we had seen the performance, we could jump a taxi home and just fix something to eat there.

But on a whim, after we left the concert, we decided to just pop our heads in to Bistro Jacques to see if they happened to have a free table. I didn't hod out much hope. It was about 10pm on one of the busiest nights of the year. There was not a chance a table would be free for us.

To my delight, a table had just become free....And the kitchen was still open. This was our lucky night. After being shown to a corner table, and handed our menus, my tummy did a little somersault in delight.

Bistro Jacques - Just Add Ginger

I have never been to Bistro Jacques before. I have visited Bistro Franc with The Boy and my mother and father-in-law, and I wasn't disappointed then. But I was intrigued to see how Bistro Jacques was in comparison.

The atmosphere in the restaurant already surpassed that of Bistro Franc. The restaurant seems much more intimate a setting, with French-themed décor adorning the walls lit with low-lighting.  The intimacy added additional romance to the evening, and made it seem like you really could be sitting in a Parisian restaurant on a magical, romance-filled evening.

Bistro Jacques - Just Add Ginger

Bistro Jacques offered a Valentine's Day 3 course meal with a complementary glass of fizz. And this suited us well. Having only really eaten rubbish during the day, we were ready to sample something hearty and nutritious, and the menu offered plenty of choice.

For starters, I opted for toasted brioche. The Boy went for the pigeon breast. Neither of us could find fault with our choices. My brioche was soft and delicious, neither too small nor overbearing. The chive hollandaise sauce complemented the combination of mushrooms and prosciutto to perfection. It was easily one of the most beautiful starters I have ever had. It wasn't too heavy, and really got my appetite going ready for the rest of the courses.

The Boy's pigeon was tender and succulent. I, having never eaten pigeon before, was pleasantly surprised when I sampled a piece. The Boy must have been impressed too because he polished off the plate in next to no time. Similar to my choice, the portion size was perfect for a starter, and got us both even more excited for our mains.

For our main, we could not have chosen two dishes more opposite in direction. The Boy chose the beef bouguignon, and I, the salmon. Looking back, the dishes we chose could not have been more perfect for us. It makes me laugh because if you had asked us to pick for each other, these would have been our first choices.

I love salmon. Boyfriend can be a little funny with fish so we rarely have it in the house. Salmon is my little treat to myself from time to time and this makes me a little picky about the way it's cooked. But I needn't have had reason to worry. The salmon was thick and meaty and gorgeous. The skin was crispy and delicious, and the ratatouille, which I confess I had been a bit nervous about, was a lovely, and unusual accompaniment, and one that I never thought would have worked. But it did. The fish herb pesto really hit the spot and really highlighted the flavour in the salmon. Ohh...just thinking back to how yummy it was my tummy is starting to rumble.

The beef bouguignon was Boyfriend's first try of the dish. It came presented beautiful, in a rustic pot atop a wooden board. The pot was filled right up to the top and fit to burst with vegetables and pieces of beef. I'm not really a fan of beef unless it is minced and in a meatball or burger patty, but I did try a little piece. It was buttery, tender, and nearly melted away in my mouth. The gratin daupinois was creamy and rich, but at the same time a lot lighter than other potato-ey alternatives.

Bistro Jacques- Just Add Ginger

And the wine.. Oh my goodness I just have to mention the wine. Even though I had salmon, the bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape we ordered was the perfect choice. It was deep, and rich, and spicy and beautiful, leaving a subtle after-taste in your mouth that I can only describe as"chocolatey" (it probably isn't chocolatey at all, but there is a hint of sweetness there that cuts through the spiciness.)

That's not mess on the table....it's passion!
By the time dessert came around I was starting to feel a little bit full. My belt had to be undone two whole notches! But it was all so worth it. I decided to take a risk and ordered bread and butter pudding (which I'd never had before.) The Boy was more traditional and ordered the cheeseboard.

My bread and butter pudding was yummy. My photo doesn't do it justice, because as soon as it came out I tucked in straight away and forgot all about documenting the experience! I really don't know how to describe the flavour to you, but just trust me when I say that it was delicious, soft, and very, very more-ish. If you take a trip to Bistro Jacques and it is on the board as a dessert, definitely give it a go. If you're sweet-toothed like me you won't be disappointed.

Boyfriend's cheeseboard offered a range of different cheeses to sample, with accompanying crackers, celery, butter and chutney. He enjoyed it very much, especially coupled with some sips from his glass of Chateauneuf. I'm definitely more of a sweets person at dinner, but if you aren't really in the mood for pud or want something to share, then the cheeseboard would be perfect.

There was something really exciting and magical eating so late. It made us feel very French indeed and we sat back and reminisced about our little Parisian getaway in the summer, and the night we got engaged. We left the restaurant feeling comfortably and jolly. I had one of the best dining experiences at Bistro Jacques, and I can't wait to return to sample more of the menu!

Moose Coffee Liverpool | Just Add Ginger

Moose Coffee Liverpool

It is absolutely no secret whatsoever that Boyfriend & I are gigantic foodies. We love cooking, we love eating amazing food, we love going to restaurants. It is a complete passion that we share that I don't think is ever going to stop.

So when, on our Liverpool staycation this past weekend, Boyfriend declared that he had found the perfect place to take me to breakfast, you can imagine my delight.

Moose Coffee is in a part of Liverpool City Centre that I don't normally go to. The business district. It's an area of beautiful buildings, swanky bars, banks, fancy restaurants...So when Boyfriend mentioned the name to me, I was immediately thinking "exclusive."

We arrived at Moose Coffee just before 11am on Sunday morning. A queue was waiting for us. A gathering of groups of people all animatedly chatting and perusing breakfast menus. Whereas for some people the thought of a queue for somewhere may fill them with dread, it filled me with joy. This place had to be good. Catching a glimpse inside, I could see that it was full to the brim inside. Again, this sent the foodie part of my brain in to overdrive.

Moose Coffee Liverpool

After a short 10 minute wait, it was our turn! Our table was upstairs, overlooking the main area of Moose Coffee. Pictures of Moose decorated the walls, chandeliers hung from the ceiling, and the atmosphere was buzzing. Reaching for a menu, I instantly died and went to foodie heaven.

Moose Coffee (which I shall now refer to as just Moose,) specialises in American & Canadian breakfasts and brunches. (How many of you guessed that?)  I haven't heard of anywhere else like it in the city. A whole cafe dedicated to all things breakfast? That serves breakfast all day? Whoever came up with this idea, is a genius. I love breakfast. And when I saw the menu at Moose, I was not disappointed.

In fact I was in turmoil. The menu was massive. And everything sounded delicious. Just having a glance I could see why Boyfriend wanted to bring me here. The menu had so many different takes on Eggs Benedict (my absolute favourite breakfast of ALL TIME.) I was actually gob-smacked. Every single dish sounded delicious. How on earth was I going to pick something?

I don't know how I did it. But after about ten minutes of "Ooo-ing" and "Aah-ing" over the breakfast choices, I narrowed it down to two options. After consulting Boyfriend for his opinion, I decided to go for Eggs Benedict served with pulled pork. I know. How phenomenal does that sound?

Boyfriend had a little more trouble making up his mind. But with a recommendation from our lovely waitress, went for American-style pancakes filled with bacon and sausage and topped off with two fried eggs.

When our breakfasts came out, I think our happiness levels went through the ceiling. The food looked amazing, smelt divine, and the portion size was amazing. The breakfasts retail for under £10 and you definitely get your moneys worth.

This wasn't a breakfast. The was a break-feast.

I didn't wait. I dived straight in to my pulled pork. Oh sweet mother of all delicious food. It was incredible. Second to none the best pulled pork I have ever had. The poached eggs were cooked to perfection too and yellow yolk rippled out when I put my knife to them. The hollandaise sauce was creamy but not overly-rich and the bagel added a very welcome crunch to the dish. It was just amazing.

Boyfriend was just as engrossed in his pancakes as I was in my eggs. And it was no wonder. His pancakes were soft and fluffy and jam packed full of flavour. They came with powdered sugar and maple syrup which complemented the bacon and sausage to perfection. The fried eggs were also cooked beautiful, with a lovely oozy yolk.

There was nothing to fault in either of our breakfasts. The portion sizes were fantastic....The food was cooked beautifully....The flavour combinations just worked.

We loved it so much at Moose that we went back on Monday as well.

This time, I went for the Eggs Benedict with potato hash. This was my second option from Sunday so it was only fair to give it a try. Although the pulled pork was still calling my name. The cheeky minx.

Boyfriend also went for his second option. A cooked breakfast with potato hash, sausage, toast, tomato and steak to boot.

The waitress was the same one who served us on Sunday. We immediately declared that we had no shame in returning. If we could come back to Moose everyday for breakfast, I think we would.

Because the breakfasts were just as yummy as on Sunday.

My poached eggs were amazingly cooked again, and the potato hash, with its onion and mustard-y goodness added a little punch of favour that boosted the eggs and hollandaise sauce up a notch. As much as I enjoyed my breakfast though, I think I've found my dish in the pulled pork. It just combines all the flavours that I love, and makes my insides beam with joy.

Boyfriend really enjoyed his breakfast too. Everything tasted fantastic. I was particularly impressed with the steak and sausage. Both brought fantastic flavour.

After breakfast, we decided to go all out and order an Oreo milkshake to share.

Moose Coffee Liverpool

At first I was a bit unsure. A biscuit milkshake? But the fact that Boyfriend and I devoured the milkshake in under 2 minutes says it all really...

Y-uuuuuuuuuummmm-yyyy!

The curly straws positioned like antlers was a really cute touch too. (I don't know if this was intentional or not. But still. Bonus points!)

If you are looking for a new place to try for breakfast in Liverpool, or are visiting and looking for somewhere to try. For goodness sake get down to Moose Coffee. If this is the kind of food you like then I promise you won't regret it. Yes, there will 99.9% be a bit of a wait unless you get there for opening time, but it is worth it. We had to wait on both days but it was only for a maximum of 15 minutes. For larger parties it may be longer, but you can always pop off and do some shopping whilst you wait.

Only - in the words of Boyfriend -

If you're heading to Moose and see us trailing behind you. Stop. And let us get ahead of you.

The Living Room, Liverpool | Just Add Ginger

Just Add Ginger

For the past week and a bit, I have been on holiday from work. On Friday night, as a bit of a date-night treat, and to celebrate my final weekend off before I head back to work on Wednesday, I booked a table at The Living Room in Liverpool. I have never been there before, but the name has always floated around in conversations with my friends. After looking at the menu online (and dribbling slightly,) I decided to go for it!

Just Add Ginger

I'm one of those impressionable people who is impressed by things easily. The feel I get when I step in to a place for the first time is usually a good indicator of how I'm going to find the inside. So, when I first saw the steps up to The Living Room, and started smiling from ear to ear, I knew I was in for an amazing evening. The entrance to the restaurant was so chic that I honestly wished that I was wearing a top hat, smoking jacket and monocle. And then, to walk in and find that there was live music playing....Oooo....it was like I'd stepped into a foodie dream!

Even though we had arrived at the restaurant a bit early, we were immediately greeted by a smiley, super-friendly waiter and shown to our table. Looking around, I couldn't believe how beautiful everything was. To quote, my exact words were "I want to live here!" Everything was decorated perfectly. Sometimes, in restaurants, the presentation can be off-putting, but this was amazing, and so sophisticated, Our waiter gave us all the time we needed to sip on our prosecco and think about what we wanted to order. I think he came back at least four times before we had stopped talking enough to actually look at our menus - poor guy!

Crispy Duck Spring Rolls

Black Pudding Donuts

Even though I had looked at the menu before I booked the table, as per usual, I changed my mind when it came to ordering and went for the Crispy Duck Spring Rolls as a starter, which were served with pineapple and plum sauce. Boyfriend went for the Black Pudding Donuts, which were accompanied by a celeriac remoulade.

OH MY GOODNESS!!

The spring rolls were absolutely divine! Sometimes, I find duck to be a bit tough and chewy, but the duck in these were so tender it almost melted in my mouth. The portion size was perfect for a starter. The presentation was beautiful too, and I almost felt bad for eating the dish it looked so pretty (I love it when food looks like art!) The plum sauce went perfectly with the rolls, and the pineapple added a tangy, sweet finish to the meat. I just smiled all the way through eating this dish, and both me and the man went silent, which I always think is a good sign that you are enjoying your food. I know I can talk for England, so when I'm quiet, it means that I'm distracted by something too fascinating for me to think about forming words.

I thought the presentation of the black pudding was equally - if not better - than the duck. Having an almost oil paint-like tube on the dish was so innovative! I'd never had black pudding, or celeriac before, and was really impressed with the flavour combination (I snuck a cheeky forkful of both.)

Sliders

Next, we were on to the mains. The Living Room tweet had recommended that I try the Sliders, because you could pick and mix what you wanted to try, so that's exactly what I did, opting for a TLR Burger, a Pulled Pork Burger, and a Devon Brown Crab Burger (which I was a little anxious about trying....I have a thing about seafood, and we had been talking about Sebastian from The Little Mermaid before we started eating....L-oooo-ng story!) I had a side order of fries with a thyme and rosemary seasoning, just in case the sliders weren't enough to fill up my belly. Boyfriend went for the Gressigham Chicken Breast, which came with garlic mash and chicken crackling (yes - I'd never heard of that either!)

I needn't have ordered the fries, because the sliders filled me up. It was really nice being able to pick the burgers I wanted to try. I usually "Um" and "Ahh" over menus for ages before deciding what to go for, and somebody has to whip the menu away from me, but with the burgers, I got a sample of different things. I think my favourite was the pulled pork. The apple chutney accompaniment complemented the dish so well and added a touch of sweetness, which I really appreciated. I'm not going to lie. I struggled with the crab. But that's only because of this weird seafood complex I have. The flavours of the burger were lovely, and anybody who is a-ok with seafood I think would really enjoy that one. I just had to have a short break and a sip of prosecco during that one before I could carry on. The TLR Burger was cooked to perfection, and incredibly tender.

The chicken breast on boyfriend's dish was beautifully tender too. I'm not usually a huge fan of chicken - unless it's a roast - but I was really impressed. The presentation of both our dishes - like our starters - was impeccable, and so inviting. I really liked the way my fries were served in a bucket, and how the sliders came with a wooden skewer to hold all the parts together. It's little things like that that really make me smile when it comes to food. Small attentions to detail are really important, and The Living Room really delivered.

Just Add Ginger
Boyfriend's ice cream: Pistachio, Double Chocolate, and Salted Caramel
By the time dessert came around, I was too full to order anything. Boyfriend ordered the ice cream, and went for the pistachio, double chocolate and salted caramel under the recommendation of our friendly waiter. I, of course, regained my appetite when his pudding arrived, so had a few spoonfuls of each scoop. The pistachio and the salted caramel were an absolute delight! I could have happily had more of both of those. The chocolate was lovely too, but I'm not really a chocolate ice cream person. I have nothing against chocolate - we are good friends - but there are other flavours I prefer when it comes to puddings, and I find chocolate a bit too rich.

During dessert, I did take a look through the cocktail menu, and found that The Living Room have a gorgeous selection of cocktails, and even more exciting, they serve my favourite cocktail of all time! This, I did not know, and it made me really happy to see it there, staring back up at me from the menu with "Come hither" stares. After we settled the bill, we headed over to the bar area to indulge in a few cheeky after-dinner drinks.

The live music was still going, and it really set a lovely tone in the restaurant. We spent ages standing at the bar, listening to the musicians, quietly singing along, and just having a lovely time!

To sum up. The Living Room is definitely one of my favourite restaurants that I have visited in Liverpool. The ambience is great, the staff are really friendly and accommodating, and the food is just beautiful! There's something to please everyone, and I seriously cannot wait to go there again.
